Billy Evans: What we know about Elizabeth Holmes husband featured in You Can See Everything

Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans outside of a courthouse

You Can See Everything, a three-hour documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, opens in theaters this week. You'd think Holmes would be the main point of focus, but people are coming out of it wondering about her husband, too.

Holmes is married to a man named Billy Evans, who is not a household name like his wife. If you saw You Can See Everything or want to see it, and you need to know more about Evans, here is a basic rundown of how he got to this point.

Who is Billy Evans? His life before Elizabeth Holmes

Prior to meeting Holmes, Evans came from a San Diego family known for a line of family-owned hotels in the area. William and Anne Evans, Billy's grandparents, founded the company in 1953, according to the Evans Hotels website. According to Business Insider, Evans Hotels operates the Bahia Resort Hotel, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, and The Lodge at Torrey Pines.

Evans, however, did not work in the hotel business prior to meeting Holmes. According to his LinkedIn profile, he graduated from MIT in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. During his time at MIT, he took student gigs at financial companies around California and was also a student brand manager at Red Bull.

Eventually, Evans took a job at LinkedIn in 2017 as a "strategy and leadership program analyst." Later in 2017, he joined Luminar Technologies, an autonomous-car tech firm.

How Billy Evans met Elizabeth Holmes

It's around this time that Evans met Holmes at a house party in San Francisco in 2017, per a joint interview the two gave to the New York Times in 2023. The timing of this is important, as Holmes was not indicted for fraud until early 2018. She had been a source of controversy prior to meeting Evans, but had not yet been charged by the SEC.

As stated in that interview, Holmes and Evans talked for three consecutive hours at the party. According to Evans, it "isn't an overstatement" to say they fell in love right away. Per Holmes, her public controversy allowed Evans to "get to know [Holmes] in a totally different way," leading them to connect in "a really deep way."

Their relationship became a public matter after they were spotted together at Burning Man. The two of them got engaged in August 2018. A few months later, at the start of 2019, Evans left his job at Luminar, per the New York Post. The Post's report included the nugget that his co-workers at the firm thought he left because of the public scrutiny around his relationship with Holmes.

Where Billy Evans and Elizabeth Holmes stand today

Evans would become one of several people who submitted letters of support during her 2022 trial in an effort to reduce her sentence. In his statement, he wrote he fell in love after speaking with her at the party before he really realized who she was. He was reluctant to start a romantic relationship for about six months because of the controversy, but it "was not long before the friendship turned into something more," per his letter.

The couple has two children: a son named William, born in 2021, and a daughter named Invicta, born in 2023. The family relocated to Texas prior to her imprisonment, close to the minimum-security facility where Holmes now resides. You Can See Everything covers the move and the family's last days together before Holmes had to leave. Family visits between Holmes and her husband and children are allowed, but conjugal visits between husband and wife are not, per People.

Evans insists that Holmes is his "best friend and soulmate," according to People. Holmes continues to maintain her innocence.

The Nintendo Switch has been the US’s bestselling console for 23 straight months

Photo by James Bareham / The Verge It’s been a good two years for the Nintendo Switch. According to Nintendo, the gaming tablet has been the bestselling console in the US for 23 straight months. And according to data from the NPD Group, it just had its best October ever, moving 735,926 units of both the Switch and Switch Lite in the US. The company says that represents a 136 percent increase compared to last year. To date, the Switch has sold 22.5 million units in the US, and last week Nintendo revealed that more than 68 million units have been sold globally . “We’re excited about our momentum,” says Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s SVP of sales and marketing. Chavez puts the company’s big October down to two main factors. One is a better supply of stock; this year in particular, it’s often been hard to find a Switch on store shelves. This has only been exacerbated by increased demand due to a combination of the pandemic and the breakout success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons . ...

Instagram accidentally reinstated Pornhub’s banned account

After years of on-and-off temporary suspensions, Instagram permanently banned Pornhub’s account in September. Then, for a short period of time this weekend, the account was reinstated. By Tuesday, it was permanently banned again. “This was done in error,” an Instagram spokesperson told TechCrunch. “As we’ve said previously, we permanently disabled this Instagram account for repeatedly violating our policies.” Instagram’s content guidelines prohibit  nudity and sexual solicitation . A Pornhub spokesperson told TechCrunch, though, that they believe the adult streaming platform’s account did not violate any guidelines. Instagram has not commented on the exact reasoning for the ban, or which policies the account violated. It’s worrying from a moderation perspective if a permanently banned Instagram account can accidentally get switched back on. Pornhub told TechCrunch that its account even received a notice from Instagram, stating that its ban had been a mistake (that message itse...

MVP versus EVP: Is it time to introduce ethics into the agile startup model?

Anand Rao Contributor Share on Twitter Anand Rao is global head of AI at PwC . The rocket ship trajectory of a startup is well known: Get an idea, build a team and slap together a minimum viable product (MVP) that you can get in front of users. However, today’s startups need to reconsider the MVP model as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) become ubiquitous in tech products and the market grows increasingly conscious of the ethical implications of AI augmenting or replacing humans in the decision-making process. An MVP allows you to collect critical feedback from your target market that then informs the minimum development required to launch a product — creating a powerful feedback loop that drives today’s customer-led business. This lean, agile model has been extremely successful over the past two decades — launching thousands of successful startups, some of which have grown into billion-dollar companies. However, building high-performing product...
