ODessa review: Sadie Sink sings in bonkers queer rock musical

The term "cult classic" has come to mean nothing in the modern age, when just about anything can be found online. Yet O'Dessa , a rock musical about destiny, defiance, and dictatorship, feels like it could have become a true cult classic — not just a movie that finds a fandom, but the kind of oddball cinema that would be so clung to by a group of movie misfits that it would be passed around on VHS like a treasured relic. And I can't think of anything more you might want from a rock musical but for it to sing out for the freaks and weirdos.  Written and directed by Geremy Jasper ( Patti Cake$ ), O'Dessa begins on a barren farm, far from anything, where the title hero sings of the fate her father promised her. She is the Seventh Son, whose song on her heirloom six-string guitar is foretold to save the world from a ruthless tyrant, who wallows in wealth and attention while his people starve. Bringing in shades of such queer gems as The Rocky Horror Picture Show ...

You can now play Donkey Kong ‘94 through Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo added an absolute gem to its Switch Online library of classic titles this week: the 1994 Game Boy game, Donkey Kong . The beloved game arrives alongside the 1995 puzzle game, Mario’s Picross . Both are available now for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, right in time for Mario Day (March 10). Donkey Kong built upon the arcade game that came before it, and features roughly 100 stages. The story should feel pretty familiar even to those who don’t have a nostalgic connection to it — Donkey Kong has kidnapped a beautiful woman (Pauline) and Mario is in hot pursuit to rescue her. While the Super Game Boy brought some enhancements for the original game, those haven’t been carried over for Nintendo Switch. But it should still be a treat to revisit as is. Mario’s Picross offers a totally different experience, presenting the player with a couple hundred puzzles to solve by chiseling away at boxes and uncovering the secret image below. DOGE has reportedly started rolling out a custom chatbot to automate some government tasks

Employees of the General Services Administration, which manages government real estate and certain IT efforts, have been given a custom chatbot from Elon Musk’s DOGE to help automate tasks, according to a new report from Wired , with an internal memo telling workers it can be used to “draft emails, create talking points, summarize text, write code.” The chatbot, GSAi, gives users a choice of three models — Claude Haiku 3.5 (the default), Claude Sonnet 3.5 v2 and Meta Llama 3.2 — and is ultimately meant to be used to “analyze contract and procurement data,” Wired reports. The GSA is one of the many agencies that have been affected by the federal government’s mass job cuts , and has so far let go upwards of 1,000 workers, sources told NPR in a report published this week. That includes roughly 90 people from its tech branch, according to Wired . In memos about the new chatbot seen by Wired , workers were told not to input “federal nonpublic information,” personally identifiable inform...

How to watch Games Done Quick's Frost Fatales speedrunning event from March 9

Games Done Quick's next weeklong charity speedrunning shindig kicks off this weekend. Frost Fatales, one of GDQ's two events celebrating women and femmes, runs from March 9 to 16, raising money for the nonprofit National Women's Law Center . Frost Fatales is the winter installment of the pair of events organized by GDQ's Frame Fatales speedrunning community. (Its summer counterpart is Flame Fatales.) Last year's Frost Fatales raised $155,000 for the same nonprofit, which fights for gender justice in issues central to the lives of women and girls. Since the first Frame Fatales event in 2019, the biannual speedruns have raised over $1 million for charity. Studio MDHR This year's festivities dive right into the deep end with a run of the charmingly punishing Cuphead at 1PM ET on Sunday, followed by Super Mario Odyssey a mere hour later. Anyone who can beat Cuphead in that time deserves a Medal of Honor. Other notable runs from the week include the OG Lege...

Down with the Enola Gay? Defense Department purging digital materials under Trumps DEI orders

The Defense Department has marked thousands of pieces of archival material and posts for deletion , complying with President Trump's crusade against anything resembling Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) mandates — including apparently unrelated materials and references flagged by keyword searches. Among the materials set to be removed from government websites and social media posts are written mentions of WWII veteran history and (at least) 26,000 archival images, reported the Associated Press, including information on Medal of Honor recipients, all women crews, and the Enola Gay, the U.S. military aircraft that dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945. SEE ALSO: U.S. immigration services wants to review potential citizens' social media The purge is intended to erase specific military-related mentions of women and minorities — social media posts and website pages that commemorate historic events, but are also inclusive of diversity, are also...

U.S. immigration services wants to review potential citizens social media

A new immigration policy could mandate prospective citizens give up their social media profiles for review, adding to President Donald Trump's push for stronger border policy and a bottleneck on legal migrant entry. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has opened a 60-day comment period on the proposed change , which would add a request for social media handles to immigration benefit applications for those already residing in the U.S. The requirement would affect those applying for green cards and naturalization, asylum-seekers, refugees, and the relatives of people who have been granted asylum or refugee status, the Verge reported . According to the USCIS, the change would affect approximately 3.5 million people. SEE ALSO: Report: Thousands of harmful AI chatbots threaten minor safety The State Department already has a policy in place that requires the disclosure of five years of social media history for foreign nationals applying for visas before they enter...

House Republicans subpoena Google over alleged censorship

Google is once again in the crosshairs of Republicans in Congress because of alleged censorship, Bloomberg writes . The House Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed Google's parent company Alphabet and CEO Sundar Pichai for evidence of communication between the tech company and the Biden administration. The subpoena specifically asks for documents covering communications between Alphabet and the executive branch, along with discussions Alphabet might have had internally or with third-parties about those communications. The Committee hopes to snowball the discovery that the Biden administration made requests to Meta to remove COVID-19 misinformation into a case for "new statutory limits on the executive branch’s ability to work with Big Tech to restrict the circulation of content and deplatform users," the subpoena says.  None of these concerns are particularly new. Pichai and other tech CEOs have been brought in front of Congress to explain things like content moderat...

My favorite horror movie trend is taking over TikTok. Its not really about scary films.

TikTok is talking about their favorite horror movies, but it has almost nothing to do with actual horror movies . The latest trend typically focuses on pop culture moments — things in movies, TV shows, or otherwise — that the creator either didn't like or found to be unsettling or sad. So the idea is to post something that was specifically horrific (or horrifically sad) to you while calling it your favorite horror movie. Typically speaking, folks choose sad moments in movies and TV and set it to Gracie Abrams' "I Love You, I'm Sorry." It's all over TikTok right now. Like lots of other trends — looking at you, Spotify Wrapped — the favorite horror movie posts are a bit of an exercise in displaying taste. The idea is to post something people love, or something sufficiently cool or, in other cases, something nostalgic, in order to elicit a response. So you'll get broad moments from Marvel or Disney movies, as well as scenes from HBO's Girls....

U.S. company Firefly Aerospace just landed on the moon with its Blue Ghost spacecraft

Blue Ghost, an unmanned spacecraft sent by the Texas-based Firefly Aerospace, has just landed on the moon. The lunar landing occurred on Sunday, marking the second-ever time a private company landed on the moon. Blue Ghost arrived at 8:34am GMT on the moon's Earth-facing side by an ancient volcanic formation in Mare Crisium known as Mons Latreille. Blue Ghost's 2.8 million mile journey began on January 15 when it launched onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Blue Ghost's moon landing marks just the second time ever that a private U.S. company has completed such a mission. It also marks the second time a U.S. spacecraft had landed on the moon since 1972, with the touch down of the manned Apollo 17 mission. The first in both those categories came from the company Intuitive Machines, which completed the first private moon landing in February of 2024. However, Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost achieved something that Intuitive Machines failed at. When the latter landed on ...

FAA reportedly ordered staff to find millions of dollars to fund Starlink deal

According to Rolling Stone , employees with the Federal Aviation Administration were told on Friday to “begin finding tens of millions of dollars for a Starlink deal,” after The Washington Post   reported that the FAA may cancel its $2.4 billion contract with Verizon to overhaul the US’s airspace management systems and go with Elon Musk’s company instead. Whether the FAA has actually dropped its Verizon deal in favor of Starlink has yet to be confirmed publicly.  Anonymous sources told Rolling Stone that the orders from FAA officials on Friday were “delivered verbally” to staff, in an “unusual” move. It comes a few days after Musk claimed on X that the situation around air traffic control communications is “extremely dire,” saying the existing system (which he wrongly attributed to Verizon before later adding a correction ) is “breaking down very rapidly.” He went on to say that “Starlink terminals are being sent at NO COST to the taxpayer on an emergency basis to restore ...

Samsung's midrange Galaxy A56 has AI photo editing and a bump for its buttons

While I naively hoped to see the Galaxy S25 Edge ahead of MWC, that wasn’t what I saw last week at Samsung's pre-show briefing. However, what I did see might intrigue many of you: a cheaper slice of Galaxy hardware in the form of the Galaxy A56. It will be available later this year, starting at $499 (or £499 in the UK), which is slightly cheaper than the Pixel 8a when it first appeared. Samsung also announced the Galaxy A36 and A26 today, and they'll start at $399 and $299 respectively.  Many of the A series upgrades this year match what we saw from the S25. The A56 is thinner than its predecessor , down to 7.4mm from 8.2mm, while packing a marginally bigger 6.7-inch screen. The bezels, which were usually one of the most prominent visual tells of an A series, have been shaved the device’s bezels down further on the A56, too. Photo by Mat Smith for Engadget. The hardware has been tweaked, with a brushed metal frame and a minor design twist: a new slightly protruding bump...
